A new collaborative songwriting initiative, the Gudinski SongHubs, has been launched in Melbourne to honor the legacy of the late Australian music titan Michael Gudinski. This program, a significant addition to APRA AMCOS’s established SongHubs platform, aims to foster the same spirit of bold creativity and artist support that defined Gudinski’s career. The inaugural event will take place over four days, bringing together a curated group of emerging and established songwriters from across Australia and New Zealand.
Honoring a Music Visionary: The Gudinski SongHubs
The Gudinski SongHubs program is a four-day intensive held in Melbourne, the hometown of the Mushroom Group founder, Michael Gudinski. This initiative is designed to celebrate the collaborative spirit and pioneering vision that not only shaped Gudinski’s own career but also influenced countless artists. APRA AMCOS, the Australasian Performing Right Association and Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society, has consistently championed the development of music creators, and this new program represents a powerful extension of that commitment.
Curated by the acclaimed Australian band The Temper Trap, one of the many acts nurtured and propelled by Gudinski’s Mushroom Group, the Gudinski SongHubs will feature songwriters from prominent artists including Baker’s Eddy, Middle Kids, and Telenova. The selection of The Temper Trap to curate the event is particularly poignant, as the band themselves benefited directly from Gudinski’s support.
A Legacy of Support and Collaboration
The program’s statement highlights that the Gudinski SongHubs "celebrates the collaborative spirit and bold vision that helped shape the rise of The Temper Trap." This sentiment directly references the period when the band held dedicated writing sessions at Gudinski’s Mount Macedon home, a crucial phase in the development of their successful debut album, Conditions. This hands-on, supportive environment is precisely what the new program seeks to replicate.
Toby Dundas, drummer for The Temper Trap, emphasized Gudinski’s pivotal role. "Michael Gudinski was such an important part of the Temper Trap story, and it’s a real privilege to be a part of the first SongHubs in his name," Dundas stated. He further elaborated on Gudinski’s impact, noting, "MG was a real champion of young Australian bands and with APRA AMCOS turning the success of the SongHubs camps towards a more band-focused format, it will be a great platform for the next generation of artists."
Mushroom Group’s Endorsement and Vision
The endorsement from Gudinski’s family underscores the program’s alignment with his core values. Matt Gudinski, CEO of Mushroom Group, expressed his pride in the initiative. "It’s no secret my dad loved Australian music and always gave artists the space to take risks and be bold," he said. "Working with APRA AMCOS on SongHubs has been a pleasure. This initiative reflects his unwavering drive to support and collaborate with songwriters, providing a platform and culture for artists to thrive." This sentiment reinforces the program’s aim to create an environment where creative freedom and artistic ambition are paramount.
SongHubs: A Proven Track Record

The Gudinski SongHubs builds upon the successful foundation of APRA AMCOS’s SongHubs program, which was first launched in 2013. Since its inception, SongHubs has provided invaluable opportunities for over 2,000 Australian and New Zealand songwriters. Across more than 30 locations globally, the program has facilitated collaborations between artists, producers, and writers, fostering a dynamic and professional studio setting.
This initiative has a proven track record of success, having contributed to the production of over 6,000 tracks. Notable collaborators who have benefited from SongHubs include acclaimed artists and songwriters such as Briggs, Chaii, Courtney Barnett, G Flip, Lindsay Rimes, Sarah Aarons, and Troye Sivan. The Gudinski SongHubs is poised to continue this legacy, offering a focused environment for musical creation and innovation.
APRA AMCOS’s Centenary and Gudinski’s Enduring Influence
The launch of the Gudinski SongHubs coincides with a significant milestone for APRA AMCOS: its 100th anniversary. This centenary celebration is marked by a series of high-profile events and initiatives designed to honor a century of supporting music creators. As previously reported, these include the establishment of a new "hall of fame-style" event in November, the "biggest ever" APRA Music Awards in Sydney in April, and the Silver Scroll Awards/Kaitito Kaiaka in New Zealand this October.
Dean Ormston, CEO of APRA AMCOS, articulated the significance of the Gudinski SongHubs within the context of the organization’s centenary. "As we celebrate APRA’s 100th year of supporting songwriters, composers and music publishers, it seemed a fitting tribute to honor one of Australian music’s most influential people by launching the Gudinski SongHubs," Ormston stated. He further emphasized the collaborative effort involved, noting, "Michael was such a passionate supporter of Aussie songwriters, and it’s been wonderful working with Matt Gudinski and (Mushroom Music co-CEO) Linda Bosidis in making this happen in our 100th year. We can’t wait to hear what comes out of it."
