"While we will take a moment to stop and reflect on this remarkable year, we’re already looking ahead," Vercoe said. The interim years will be spent monitoring the health of the 90 new fledglings as they reach sexual maturity, which typically takes five years for males and nine years for females.

The journey of the kākāpō remains a precarious one, but the success of the latest breeding season provides a blueprint for what is possible through science-led conservation. The world’s heaviest parrot is no longer just surviving; it is, for the first time in a century, beginning to reclaim its place in the New Zealand wilderness.
