Los Angeles is poised to redefine urban mobility with the introduction of electric air taxis, as entertainment giant AEG has officially partnered with aviation innovator Archer Aviation to establish a vertiport within its bustling L.A. Live entertainment and sports district. This groundbreaking collaboration aims to create the first vertiport in Downtown Los Angeles, significantly expanding Archer’s ambitious air taxi network ahead of the highly anticipated 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The strategic placement of this new vertiport at L.A. Live, a nexus for millions of annual visitors and home to iconic venues like Crypto.com Arena, Peacock Theater, and the GRAMMY Museum, positions Archer Aviation as the exclusive air taxi partner for this premier entertainment campus. This development is a crucial step in Archer’s broader vision for a comprehensive aerial transportation network across Southern California, which already includes planned landing and takeoff sites at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the University of Southern California (USC), Orange County, Santa Monica, Hollywood Burbank Airport, Long Beach Airport, and Van Nuys Airport. Furthermore, Archer is actively engaged in discussions with the Los Angeles Rams and Hollywood Park, the expansive 300-acre district surrounding SoFi Stadium, exploring the possibility of establishing a dedicated vertiport in that vicinity.
Pioneering Urban Air Mobility in Los Angeles
The partnership between AEG and Archer Aviation represents a significant leap forward in the burgeoning field of Urban Air Mobility (UAM). Nick Baker, President and COO of AEG Global Partnerships, confirmed that the L.A. Live vertiport project is currently in its initial developmental stages. The logistical intricacies, including the precise siting of the vertiport and securing the necessary permits, are expected to be finalized in the near future. Both organizations have already completed a thorough feasibility study for the L.A. Live location, meticulously examining factors such as land use, airspace regulations, power infrastructure availability, and potential community impact.

Baker expressed his company’s profound admiration for Archer’s extensive infrastructure and their forward-thinking strategic plans for Los Angeles. "We were quickly amazed by the breadth and scope of [Archer’s] current infrastructure and their plans for Los Angeles in particular," Baker stated. He further elaborated on the synergy between the two companies, highlighting how AEG’s vast real estate footprint, coupled with the immense volume of world-class content hosted within these venues, created an ideal alignment for Archer’s future ambitions. This collaboration underscores a shared vision for enhancing connectivity and attendee experience within a globally recognized entertainment hub.
Archer’s Vision for the Skyways of Los Angeles
Archer Aviation’s overarching objective is to commence operations of its Los Angeles air taxi network this year, ensuring a fully functional and integrated system is in place well in advance of the 2028 Olympic Games. The company plans to deploy its fleet of "Midnight" aircraft, designed to accommodate one pilot and four passengers, for services throughout Southern California. These electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft are engineered to safely share existing airspace with helicopters and conventional small aircraft. Archer emphasizes that its aircraft are not only all-electric, contributing to a cleaner urban environment, but are also significantly quieter at cruising altitudes compared to traditional rotorcraft.
The Midnight aircraft boasts impressive capabilities, with speeds reaching up to 150 mph. This speed is expected to dramatically reduce travel times across the Los Angeles metropolitan area, potentially cutting journeys that typically take over an hour in notorious traffic down to a mere 10 to 20 minutes. Archer is targeting a pricing structure for its air taxi services that is competitive with premium rideshare options currently available, such as Uber Black. As the company scales its fleet and expands its network, it anticipates a significant reduction in operational costs, which could translate into even more accessible fares for consumers in the long term.
Transforming Event Attendance and L.A. Live’s Appeal
The introduction of air taxi services is anticipated to alleviate a significant travel burden for event-goers, opening up new possibilities for attendees who may reside in areas currently considered too distant for convenient travel to L.A. Live. Baker noted the unique challenges of Los Angeles as a market, describing it as the most competitive sports and entertainment landscape globally, with New York City as a distant second. He pointed out that a key differentiator is Los Angeles’s sprawl and its desirable climate, which can often make long drives to events less appealing.

"To ease that burden of how you’re traveling to and from opens up the opportunity for us to serve more fans who maybe are in a location that is far to travel via vehicle to L.A. Live for an event that they want to attend," Baker explained. He posed a compelling question about attendee behavior: "The difference there is the density, and we compete more with the weather. Because there are days when it’s 85 degrees and perfect on the beach, and it’s hard pressed to go an hour and a half in the car to an event. But if you could go to that event in 15 minutes, would you go?" This highlights the transformative potential of air taxis in enhancing the accessibility and attractiveness of major events.
AEG and Archer are working towards a fully operational and seamless air taxi service in time for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics. The service is intended to cater to a wide spectrum of events hosted at L.A. Live, from major sporting contests like basketball and hockey games to high-profile concerts and prestigious award ceremonies such as the Grammy and BET Awards. This integration aims to showcase the viability and convenience of UAM on a global stage during one of the world’s most watched events.
Future Trajectory and Global Expansion Potential
The next critical phase in the development of the L.A. Live vertiport involves refining the operational approach and enhancing the guest experience. This process is currently underway, with a focus on creating a seamless and efficient journey for passengers. The planned vertiport is slated to be equipped with BETA Technologies’ advanced electric aviation charging solutions. This integration is crucial for establishing a standardized charging infrastructure, a vital component for scaling air taxi operations effectively within and around major metropolitan areas.
AEG’s expansive global portfolio, which includes over 100 venues worldwide, presents a significant opportunity for the replication of this successful partnership. Baker indicated that the collaboration with Archer could potentially be extended to other AEG-owned and operated facilities across the globe. "Anytime we find a company who is an expert in an innovative category and can deliver upon that in our initial partnership, which in this case would be L.A. Live, we then think about how we could deploy that across our global portfolio and footprint of entertainment real estate districts that we own and control throughout the world," Baker stated. This forward-looking perspective suggests that the L.A. Live initiative is not merely a singular project but a blueprint for future innovation in urban transportation and venue management on an international scale. The potential for future growth of this partnership is substantial, promising to reshape how people access entertainment and sporting events in major cities worldwide.
