Bernie Lynch, Co-Founder of Australia’s Eurogliders, Dies at 72

Bernie Lynch, the acclaimed frontman and co-founder of the iconic Australian pop group Eurogliders, has died at the age of 72 following a protracted battle with throat cancer. The news was confirmed by his former wife and bandmate, vocalist Grace Knight, who shared a heartfelt tribute detailing the profound loss to both her and the music community. Lynch’s passing marks the end of an era for the band, whose infectious melodies and enduring hits defined a significant chapter in Australian music history.

Knight announced Lynch’s death on Thursday, March 12, expressing her deep sorrow. "It’s with a heavy heart I’m posting this to let everyone know that Bernie passed away last Thursday," she wrote. "I am heartbroken and don’t know how to proceed without him." Her words painted a vivid picture of their shared journey, highlighting the irreplaceable void left by his absence. "I don’t know how many shows Eurogliders have done over the years, it must be thousands, and for every single one of them, I’ve had Bernie there, standing beside me. It’s been such a wonderful, wonderful journey and I’m so very proud and honored to have shared it with him."

The Eurogliders emerged from Perth, Western Australia, in 1980, a period characterized by a burgeoning alternative rock and post-punk scene. Lynch was instrumental in shaping the band’s sound and vision, leading them to international recognition. Their breakthrough came in 1984 with the release of the single "Heaven (Must Be There)," a track that would become synonymous with the band and a enduring anthem for a generation.

"Heaven (Must Be There)" was featured on the Eurogliders’ second album, This Island, and quickly climbed the charts, reaching No. 2 on the ARIA Chart in Australia and making a significant impact on international music charts, including the Billboard charts in the United States. The song’s enduring appeal is evidenced by its continued presence in popular culture; it currently soundtracks a major real estate television campaign in Australia. Music historian The Professor of Rock has also recognized "Heaven" as one of the most underrated and overlooked songs of its era, underscoring its lasting artistic merit.

The band continued to produce domestic hits throughout the mid-1980s. Lynch, in particular, lent his distinctive vocals to several of their most memorable tracks. The 1985 single "We Will Together," sung by Lynch, further cemented the band’s popularity. Another significant hit followed in 1986 with "Can’t Wait to See You," before the band ultimately disbanded at the close of the decade.

Despite the initial disbandment, the Eurogliders’ legacy proved resilient. The group reunited on multiple occasions, demonstrating the enduring connection between the band members and their dedicated fanbase. A notable reunion occurred in the mid-2000s, which included the release of new material and performances on the highly successful "Countdown Spectacular" nostalgia tour. Most recently, the band reunited in 2023 to perform at the Sunset Sounds beachside festival, reaffirming their status as beloved figures in Australian music.

Lynch’s battle with cancer began in 2024 when he was diagnosed with throat cancer. While initial treatment was successful, the illness later spread to his bones and organs, leading to a rapid decline in his health. Knight’s personal reflections offer a poignant glimpse into Lynch’s character beyond his musical achievements. She described him as an "incredibly kind and caring person and generous to a fault." She recounted his thoughtfulness in ensuring the band’s comfort, often providing post-show refreshments and creating a welcoming atmosphere.

"He’d fuss about making sure the band were happy and had after show cheese and biscuits and a refreshing beverage," Knight shared. "He’d come to stay at my house and turn up with bags of food and take over the kitchen. He was funny and intelligent and engaging. If you weren’t well, or life had thrown you a curve ball, he’d be the first one on the phone to see how you were going." This portrayal emphasizes Lynch’s humanitarian qualities and his dedication to those around him, both personally and professionally.

The true enduring legacy of Bernie Lynch lies in his songwriting. Knight emphasized his pivotal role in the band’s existence and success. "Without Bernie’s songs, there would be no Eurogliders," she stated. "Songs he wrote as a young man that are still being listened to, songs that 40 years later still get played on the radio, songs that people still sing along to at our shows, songs that have brought so much joy to so many people. What a great legacy and such a fantastic contribution to the cultural landscape of this country."

Lynch’s songwriting prowess was the bedrock upon which the Eurogliders’ career was built. His ability to craft memorable melodies and relatable lyrics resonated deeply with audiences, creating a catalog of music that continues to be cherished. The timeless quality of his compositions ensures that his work will continue to inspire and entertain future generations.
