Rolling Loud Coming Back to California in 2027: Co-Founder Matt Zingler Discusses Its Return

The immensely popular hip-hop festival, Rolling Loud, is set to return to California in December 2027, with its flagship event scheduled to take place at the Nos Events Center in San Bernardino. This marks a significant homecoming for the festival, which has a long-standing relationship with the Southern California region. Co-founder and CEO Matt Zingler expressed enthusiasm for the chosen venue, highlighting its suitability for large-scale events and its strong fan base.

"San Bernardino has always been a great location to do the shows for us. There’s a ton of fans out there," Zingler told Billboard. The Nos Events Center, situated just outside Los Angeles County, has previously hosted Rolling Loud California in 2017 and 2021. Zingler elaborated on the strategic advantages of this location, noting that it often proves more accessible and less congested for attendees compared to major urban centers. This allows for a more controlled environment where the festival can experiment with site layout and incorporate additional activations.

Rolling Loud’s California Evolution

Rolling Loud California’s presence in Southern California has seen several venue shifts over the years. From 2023 to 2025, the festival was held at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, drawing massive crowds and featuring headliners such as Nicki Minaj, Playboi Carti, and Travis Scott. The return to San Bernardino in 2027 signifies a strategic decision to leverage a proven and effective location for the brand’s continued growth.

This upcoming event will mark the eighth edition of Rolling Loud held in Southern California, underscoring the region’s importance to the festival’s identity and success. Rolling Loud’s expansive reach has seen it host events across the United States and internationally since its inception in 2015. The festival’s global footprint includes past festivals in Miami, Northern California, New York, Portugal, Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, Thailand, Austria, and India.

However, the festival’s international expansion has not been without its challenges. Earlier this year, Rolling Loud organizers were forced to cancel scheduled dates in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia, citing delays with local partners. "This one hurts," organizers stated in a public announcement, reflecting the disappointment associated with such disruptions.

Navigating the Festival Landscape

Despite the inherent volatility of the festival industry, marked by cancellations, pandemics, and economic uncertainties, Rolling Loud has demonstrated remarkable resilience and continued success. Zingler attributes this longevity to the brand’s ability to adapt and innovate. He firmly believes that Rolling Loud faces minimal competition in the realm of booking top-tier urban music talent.

"I don’t really know of any other festivals booking urban [music] right now," Zingler stated. "We don’t have competition. We’re the biggest [hip-hop festival] brand." This bold assertion points to Rolling Loud’s dominant position in the market and its unique ability to consistently attract a roster of influential artists.

The festival’s sustained relevance is also a testament to its dynamic approach to fan engagement and programming. Zingler emphasized the importance of evolving alongside the audience. "We’ve done a lot of shows," he added. "If you don’t grow with your fans and keep it new… your brand withers and dies. But if you’re constantly adjusting and have your finger on the pulse, you can go forever." This philosophy ensures that Rolling Loud remains a fresh and exciting experience for both new and returning attendees.

Global Reach and Future Endeavors

Rolling Loud’s commitment to global expansion continues with events planned in various international markets. The upcoming Rolling Loud India, scheduled for December 12-13 in Mumbai, is set to enter its second year. Following a successful debut that reportedly drew 65,000 fans over two days in 2025, Zingler anticipates an even larger turnout for the 2026 iteration.

"The first year in Mumbai was training the fans because it was very local crowd-wise, so a lot of people in India had never experienced a hip-hop show before," Zingler explained. He believes that with the foundational experience of the inaugural event, attendees will have a clearer understanding of what to expect, leading to increased capacity and engagement.

Zingler also highlighted Rolling Loud’s strategy for international programming, emphasizing a tailored approach to each region. "When we go internationally, we switch it up a lot. Every place that we go, they digest music differently," he said. This means that lineups are not simply replicated across different countries; instead, artists who resonate most with local audiences are prioritized, ensuring a more authentic and impactful experience.

Innovation and Expansion Beyond Music

Beyond its core festival offerings, Rolling Loud is actively exploring new avenues for brand expansion and audience engagement. The festival has consistently attracted a majority of new fans at each event, a trend that Zingler expects to continue as the brand grows. This growth is fueled by introducing new artists to lineups, exploring innovative creative directions, and developing unique merchandise.

"It’s not a cut-and-paste model. There’s always unique talent, different stages, different activations," Zingler noted. This commitment to originality is evident in strategic partnerships, such as the collaboration with tech/cannabis company Weedmaps for special events and artist experiences, beginning with Kickback New York Lit by Rolling Loud.

In a significant move into the entertainment industry, Rolling Loud is also set to be the subject of a feature film. Rolling Loud: The Movie, starring Owen Wilson, Matt Rife, Christian Convery, Christine Ko, and Henry Winkler, is slated for a U.S. theatrical release on October 2. The film, co-produced with Live Nation Studios, was partially filmed during Travis Scott’s 2024 festival appearance in Miami. The narrative centers on a father’s chaotic search for his son after losing him in the festival crowd, a plot inspired by director Jeremy Garelick’s personal experience. Zingler played a role in the film’s production, working closely with Garelick to ensure the script authentically captured the essence of the Rolling Loud experience. The movie is expected to feature appearances from prominent Rolling Loud performers including Travis Scott, Sexyy Red, Ski Mask The Slump God, and Ty Dolla $ign.
